Abstract

Objective To study the protective effect of propofol on myocardium after cervical spinal cord injury(SCI)in rats. Methods A cervical laminectomy extending from C6-T1 was performed and the experimental acute cervical 7 spinal cord injury model was established by modified Allen’s method.Totally 96 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group(sham operation); lactate Ringer’s injection group(infusion with lactate Ringer’s injection at a rate of 12 mL•kg-1•h-1 over 1 hour after SCI); propofol group(infusion with propofol at a rate of 15 mg•kg-1•h-1 over 1 hour after SCI). At 1h after SCI, c-fos protein in myocardium was detected by immuno-histochemical methods. At 4h and 24h after SCI, we measured serum LDH,CK and CK-Mb level. At 72h, myocardial specimen was sampled from left ventricle to observe structure under light and electron microscope. Results c-fos protein expression and cardiac enzymes level in lactate Ringer’s injection group were higher than those in the control group and propofol group(P<0.05. Ultrastructure of myocardial tissue presented abnormal changes in SCI groups, but the changes in propofol group were milder. Conclusion High level spinal cord injury could induce
